Two fixed male cats marking territory? Big problem, help please?

So, my family & I have had animals forever basically. As of now, we have two dogs, a male & female & three cats, 2 male, 1 female. All of our animals are fixed. My male cat Tigger, who is 3 1/2 & the oldest of all the cats has always welcomed our newest additions into the house, of course though, never another adult, always kittens or puppies. I work at an animal shelter & my mom visited me in February & ended up leaving with a 1 1/2 year old fixed male, Lui. We assumed it would take some time & it did. They would hiss & swat & although Lui is at least 2 times bigger then Tigger, Lui respects him & has realized he's alpha male. Now they can sleep on the same chair & sit near one another but still when one gets in the others space a little too much, you'll hear some growls. No harm has been done though. So for the past 2 weeks I'd say, my brothers have been complaining that a cat has been peeing on their dirty clothes. Now, my mom just went downstairs & saw that a pile of clean towels was peed on. We need a remedy to this problem & getting rid of one of the cats isn't an option at all. I'm sorry I rambled so much, just trying to explain every detail. Now we know for a fact it can't be the female, Lillian, she's blind & really stays on the first floor where no peeing has been done. We have two litter boxes & my mom was wondering if something as simple as getting a third might help? Any answer or suggestion will be greatly appreciated.

  1. another cat isn't your answer. With two males even fixed they want there own space, so they mark it this way there is no conflict. we had the same trouble. we bought 6 of them cat houses you know the  ones covered with carpet, and spread them around the house, they mark them and left the rest of the house alone. Good luck.(ps) stephani answer is right on too.

  2. Rule of thumb with cats and litter boxes. Always have a litter box for each cat PLUS one more. Just in case.

Are both of your males marking, or is it just one the one? If it's just the one, he might have urinary tract infection. That or he is still feeling slightly threatened by the other male in the house. If it is both of the males doing the spraying, it could possibly be that they both are still feeling a bit threatened by each other.

Have you switched litter? Or moved any of their litter boxes? That could make a difference too. If you work for an animal shelter, I would ask your colleagues about it and see if they might have any suggestions too.

    Good luck!
