  1. No more than four at the most. And for neons you'll need a heater and a filter, just so you know. Usually the rule is 1" of fish per gallon, unless you have a really, really good filtration system.

ADDED: The 1" per gallon rule is a very good guideline for a novice setting up an aquarium. It is mainly because of filtration requirements, and it's not about territory or how much water each fish needs. Beginner aquariums usually contain community fish, and territory would only be a significant factor if you were keeping aggressive or semi-aggressive fish, like cichlids. If you are experienced enough with fish to know that to keep more fish you need a bigger filter, you wouldn't be asking the question of how many in the first place. I'm assuming since it's only a 2 gallon tank, it was bought as a starter kit. Starter kits do not have good filters in them, and with these filters the 1" rule does apply. If you invest in a larger filter, you can add more fish (a 10 gallon filter= 10" of fish, etc.).

Also, a filter and a heater are absolutely necessary for keeping neon tetras. If you keep your house really warm, they may survive without one, but they really just need a heater. The only fish that don't necessarily need heaters are goldfish, but they need a very large tank and a lot of filtration since they get so big and have a lot of waste.

  2. You could probably put 4-6 fish that size in a 2 gallon tank. Neon tetras do not need a heater to live.  We've had then in our tanks for 14 years and we don't have a heater.

  3. 2 Gallons.. Seriously, I'll add up to 10 of them!

People always say 1" per gallon.. If that's the case, the tank will look so empty!

  4. People would normally say 1" of fish per gallon, but neons are best in a group of at least 4 and as long as the tank is kept clean with the right water chemistry (ammonia, nitrate, nitrite, PH), you could put about 6 in. Good luck

  5. The 1" of fish per gallon rule is completely false. If you have a two gallon aqaurium with a heater and filter than I would say go ahead and put a small school about 5 or 6. They feel more comfortable in schools and will more than likely swim closely together, therefore not needing as much tank space. If you don't have a heater or a filter I would invest in both. Few things (if anything) can live without these!

  6. When it comes to Neon Tetras, the 1" per gallon rule does not apply. Instead, you add as many as your filter (Both mechanicle and biological) can support as long as they have room to move around. They are a schooling fish that's best kept in a group of a minimum 5-6.

  7. none they need a gallon each

and need to school in groups of 6+

  8. not many, if any
