I noticed that the one of them began acting as if it was trying to mate with the other and the other doesn't seem to be fight ing him off. Is this normal? Will it stop eventually?

  1. regular syrian hamsters? i hope not i hate irresponsible people that dont know anything before they buy an animal.

regular hamsters dont want to live with other ones. they are solitary and territorial. take them back and get dwarf hamsters who love to live in groups or pairs.

if you keep two regular hamsters one will die, hamsters will fight to death, or one will bully the other and not let it eat drink or run on the wheel.

  2. What kind of hamsters are they? If they are dwarfs, than you are alright, dwarfs are social. But if they are syrians, you need to SEPARATE them immediately! Syrian hamsters are not social at all. They are highly territorial, and will usually fight to the death if another animal wanders onto their turf.

Humping is nothing sexual. It is to show dominance. The one doing the humping is telling the other one he is in charge. This humping behaviour will soon turn to vicious fighting if they are syrians, and one will die while the other one injured.

But please do not return them, in exchange for dwarf hamsters. That would be incredibly selfish and careless of you. You bought these two, now they are yours. Don't be a bad owner, and do what ever they need. Buy a second cage the next opportunity you get. Or maybe even return one of them, but don't exchange them. That would be heartless.

  3. I guess your hamsters are dwarfs considering you have kept both in the same cage.

Gender sexing is very difficult in dwarf hamsters and most pet shops make mistakes and mix the males and females together. So if you have dwarf hamsters, there is a chance that their sexing is wrong. Do confirm that they are both same s*x before jumping to conclusions since it is very rare to see such mating behavior in same s*x hamsters.
