Question:

Two microchips in one pet a good idea?

I originally got the Home again chips in my cats, but now the $15 a year is just irritating. So even if I lose my pet and say I stop paying the fee 7 years down the line they won't give out my info because I didn't pay seems a little wrong.

So I am considering switching to AVID which has a one time fee, but is there any repercussions to having two microchips in my babies? Can I remove a microchip?

  1. There are at least 2 different readers so it's not such a bad idea..  And it should be a one time fee... not yearly!

  2. you can talk to the vet about it.  if you keep your cat inside it is less likely to get in  a situation that you will need the microchip.

  3. You have to pay a yearly rate? How rubbish! Unfortunately, it isn't a good idea to have two microchips in. If the cat does get lost and need scanning, they might pick up the Home Again chip first and not be able to contact you - and whoever is scanning won't know to check for another chip. Shame you went with this company, but I'd just carry on paying for it if I were you because I don't think there's much else to be done. $15 a year isn't much!!

EDIT: Yeah there are different readers - but anyone scanning will be using a generic one that should pick up any chip. When scanning a lost cat, you don't need to use loads of different readers to check for different chips!!

  4. The only complication I could think of is: if your cat gets lost, someone finds it, brings it to a vet or shelter or what have you, they scan the cat, find a chip and hit a dead end because they won't give out the info.  They probably wouldn't check for another chip.

I would think you could have the chip removed...Talk to your vet though.  They'll know.

Thanks for the info!  When I get a pet I'll have the AVID put in.  I don't like yearly fees either!

    Good Luck!!
