  1. Earth has a second moon of sorts with possibly more. But don't go running for your binoculars just yet. Its small and it will only remain within earth orbit for a few more thousand years. Check the link.

  2. Oh, no. I'm sorry. There is not going to be two moons on Aug. 27th, 2008. It's just a hoax email that started in 2003.

I'm sorry, if it got your hopes up. It would be cool though! :)

I hoped this answered your question!

    God bless you. :)

  3. Uhm, no.

On August 27th, 2003, Mars came about as close as it gets to the Earth.  It was spectacular.  And an email went around saying many correct things about the event.  For example, it said that in a 100x telescope, Mars would look about the same size as the full Moon (without a telescope).  This lets you look up at the Moon, and get an expectation of the kind of detail you might see of Mars through a modest scope.

Well, the following summer, the email was modified - the date was changed, and some details were changed.  And each summer it goes out again.

This summer, Mars is more or less on the other side of the Sun from us.  The next Mars closest approach is January 2010.

However, we've got a nice Jupiter this summer.

  4. Two moons aren't going to appear on August 27th. This comes from a hoax e-mail which circulates every year at this time. For more information: http://www.hoax-slayer.com/hsblog/2007/0...

  5. No this isn't true. This question usually mentions Mars. If it were true Mars would already be significantly larger, showing a disk.  It isnt.  There aren't any other worlds in the solar system that will be paying a visit either.  Maybe Nibiru is arriving earlier than expected?  Forget I said that.  Somebody would believe it and I would become the source for that nonsense.

  6. You've been fooled by an email hoax. The Earth can never have two moons.

This is an urban myth began with an email in 2003, which said that Mars would be very close and bright. It also had a line in it which suggested that Mars, IN A TELESCOPE, would look as large as the Moon with the naked eye. Somewhere along the way, the "with a telescope" bit disappeared. August 2003 came and went, and many people had wonderful views of Mars through telescopes provided by amateur astronomers around the world.

Then the email resurfaced in 2004, when Mars was on the far side of the Sun. Then again in 2005, when Mars was in opposition in October, not August, and quite a bit smaller. Then again in 2006, when Mars was again on the far side of the Sun. Then again in 2007, when opposition was in December, and Mars smaller still. Now, you're the first to be fooled by this fake email in 2008! Mars is again on the far side of the Sun.

When will people learn that astronomical events are predicted for a particular date, which has absolutely nothing to do with Earth years, and you can't just keep recycling the same prediction and changing the year? Everything on Mars happens in a 26 month cycle: August 2003, October 2005, December 2007, etc.

  7. Just another "Mars" "Moon" Hoax-- that keeps coming back again and again.

  8. It is true, but not like you think. Mars will be moving extremly close to the Earth, the nearest it has been in hundreds of thousands of years. Which will make it seem like Earth has 2 moons. The best time to view this would be late at night out of the city.

  9. *laughing*

No. The Earth only has one moon!
