Two more pitchers added to the Chicago Cubs’ roster – MLB Update
The Chicago Cubs’ search for more pitchers is far from over. They have now signed Andy Sonnanstine and Manny Corpas, both of whom are right-handers, for the roster. However, as reports came to surface, the deal is that of non-guaranteed split contracts.
This comes after the club’s seemingly aggressive search for experienced and gifted figures for the front-office. To fill up the roster is something that the Chicago Cubs are addressing on a priority basis these days, as is evident by the recent inductions.
Having had an experience of 5 years, Manny Corpas has so far appeared in 280 games. He had remained part of the Colorado Rockies all this while before being signed by the Chicago Cubs in the split contract.
In his 280 appearances that he had for his former team, the pitcher has maintained 3.93 ERA in the 286.0 innings that he has pitched, going for 206 strikeouts, having had 34 saves, losing 16 of the games. Interestingly, his season average too stands at 3.93
throughout.
The 28-year-old Andy Sonnanstine, on the other hand, has four years of experience to offer to the Chicago Cubs. Although he does not have a good ERA to his credit, having had 5.26, he has all the potential to help the Cubs in solidifying the defence.
In 132 games that he has appeared for the Tampa Bay Rays, his former team, he has played 80 of the games, with 343 strikeouts to his credit, having had 31 losses and winning 28 games. He has pitched a total of 540.1 innings.
Only in the start of this month did new manager, Dale Sveum say that pitching is important. “It all starts with pitching, and we definitely have the pitching to go out there and compete,” he said. “That could be changed. You need to manufacture runs if we
don’t have the power. If we do have the power, then you can do other things. Competing and winning, it all comes down to your pitching.”
Such inductions are indeed a reminder of how much importance the Chicago Cubs attach to pitching.
