Two new characters revealed for Injustice – Video Games Update
NetherRealm Studios, the creators of the Mortal Kombat fighting games, take another swing at a fighting game featuring DC comic characters and have announced two more to be added to the game’s roster.
NetherRealm Studios, formally owned by Midway games before it went bust, were behind the Mortal Kombat franchise, which is famous for its extreme violence and gore. After Midway went bankrupt, Time Warner picked up the Mortal Kombat intellectual property
and the studio which made the games in 2010. The studio was renamed to NetherRealm studios.
The first game NetherRealm made was a reboot of Mortal Kombat (MK) in 2011. The game used the Unreal Engine 3 and ditched the 3D game-play of the previous MK games as they opted to go for the classic 2D fighting game-play because the developers were probably
inspired by the commercial success of Street Fighter IV which also went back to its 2D roots.
NetherRealm announced their next project Injustice: Gods among Us at this years’ Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3). The developers will be going back to the DC universe once again and focusing on the Injustice League for this brawler.
Their last attempt with a DC cast in their fighting game was Mortal Kombat vs. DC (MK vs. DC) which was released for the Playstation 3 and the Xbox 360 in 2008. MK vs. DC was a decent fighter but the fans were upset because it was the first game in the series
that was toned down in terms of gore and violence, features the series is famous for.
The finishers or ‘Fatalities’ in the game were watered down and this greatly upset the long time fans of the series. Gamers felt that the game was just cashing in on the success of the Batman movie The Dark Knight.
Today NetherRealm has announced that Nightwing and Cyborg will be playable characters in the game taking the announced character list to eight. Apart from the two new characters Superman, Batman, Harley Quinn, Flash, Solomon Grundy and Wonder Woman have
been revealed as being playable. The game will have a 2013 release date and will be available on the Playstation 3, Xbox 360 and the Nintendo Wii-U.
