Two other people and I are taking this English class online and don’t know where to begin with this eassay. We’ve attempted to contact our teacher but we haven’t had any luck. Any hints? Tips?

Ideas to use in the essay would be much appreciated!

Essay Question: In life, there are some negotiables and there are some

non-negotiables when it comes to a person's moral code. Imagine you are

traveling the globe. From what you know of three cultures, what differs

between your moral codes. What could you deal with, and what needs

would you have that your hosts would have to accommodate for you? Take

a look in Wikipedia at some distant cultures' traditions. When in

Japan, it might not bother you to take your shoes off, for example. But

could you imagine placing such a ritual on getting a cup of tea as this

ancient tea ritual <>http://www.thetasteofasia.com/video/tea_demo.wmv>

(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WOCiOOJoWXk)? Write an essay taking a

position on some different traditions in distant cultures. Would you

say, "When in Rome, do as the Romans," or is it better to stick to your

own traditions?

  1. Pick three cultures that have cultural traits we in the West consider peculiar. Wikipedia, as your teacher said, is a good resource.

    I would personally recommend:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Culture_of_...

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Culture_of_...

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basque_peop...

Pick out one thing in each one that you wouldn't be able to live with, and one thing you would. See whether your personal level of tolerance exceeds your level of intolerance. That answers the last part of the question - whether Roman or traditional.
