I assume that her title will be passed on to her son and that he will be Baron Thatcher, technically, but rather Lord Thatcher?

And, who was the last PM to receive a title that was inherited?

  1. You assume incorrectly.  Baroness Thatcher received a life peerage and the title will not (thank God) be passed on to her hapless son.  The last PM to receive a hereditary peergae was Lord Home (Alec Douglas-Home), however, to his lasting credit ,within days of receiving it, he renounced it....

  2. The answers so far are correct for the first part of your question (ie Mark Thatcher will not inherit his mother's title as it is a life peerage, but he has inherited his father's baronet title.

The other answers on PMs receiving titles are wrong. The last PM to receive a hereditary  peerage was Harol Macmillan who was created Earl of Stockton in 1984, and that title is now held by his son, Alexander Macmillan. Since then, only Prince Edward has been created an Earl (Wessex).

Of the other living ex-Prime Ministers- John Major was made a Knight of the Garter, and Tony Blair has yet to receive any title or honour.

  3. Your're incorrect. Baroness Thatcher's peerage is a life peerage and will die with her. Her husabnd was however created a hereditary Baronet and on his father's death her son inherited the title "Sir" and the post-nominal letters "Bart".

The last PM to receive a hereditary title was Anthony Eden created 1st Earl of Avon, his son inherited the title but he died without children and the title reverted to the Crown, the last PM to receive a hereditary peerage that still exists is Clement Attlee whose Grandson is the 3rd Earl Attlee and is an elected hereditary peer remaining in the House Of Lords.

  4. It isn't a title they pass on. It's because she's a woman and women aren't called Sir. Many ex politicians go on to work in the House of Lords and it's why men are called Lord. I think a female Lord is Baroness. It's not an inherited title.

Churchill was from a royal family as his father was an inherited Lord and he was born in Blenheim Palace but I'm not sure if Churchill had a title. The current heir to Blenheim Palace is a drug addict called Jamie Blandford (proper name is Jamie Spencer Churchill). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jamie_Spenc...
