Two part question: What bug do I have - and how do I get rid of them??

I have bugs on my indoor basil plant by the window. Sometimes the window is open, mostly not.

The bugs are tiny, about a milimetre big. They are green, and have tiny antenaes. They don't seem to be making holes in the leaves, but they are certainly deforming them and making them weak.

I'm looking for an organic way to get rid of them. So far I've just been flicking them off and squishing them... They keep coming back.

  1. Not sure what type of bug they are but you can try mixing up some water and your hand dish detergent about 10 drops in a spray bottle and spray the plant with your mix. I have a friend that mixes an ounce of mouth wash in his. Hope this helps!

  2. Sounds like Aphids

Home remedy for aphids. You can kill aphids by spraying, especially under the leaves, with a solution of 2 tsp mild dish or laundry soap to a bottle of luke warm water. The soap washes off the aphid’s protective waxy coating and causes dehydration. You can also mix three parts luke warm water to one part vegetable or horticultural oil and a couple drops of dish soap. This mixture can be sprayed on to clog the respiratory spiracles of aphids.  Spray once a week taking turns between solutions.  If using these solutions on food plants, be sure to wash them before eating. If using the oil solution, don’t spray on very hot and sunny days as the oil can magnify the sun and possibly harm the plant.

  3. Aphids, and they will destroy your plant. If the suggestion above me doesn't work, try adding a cap full of mouthwash and a half a beer to the soap and water mixture. Good luck.
