Question:

Two questions [GPA and college requirements]?

1) Okay, I screwed off most of my freshman year. For my final grades, I had mostly D's [70-78]. I failed a couple classes but I've already made them up. Since my freshman year, I've been getting all A's and B's [85-100]. If I keep it up with the high grades, will my GPA be too bad? Could you estimate around what it will be?

2) My school doesn't offer a lot of classes. It's extremely small. I looked up what requirements most colleges wanted and seen that they require 2 years of foreign language and 1-2 years of a lab science. I've done A LOT of science, but the only lab one I had was from freshman year and I failed half of that. I worked it out that I would take bio & chem w/ lab next year in night classes. That's the only time I'm eligible for taking those. So that would only give me one lab (unless you count the half in freshman year that I DIDN'T fail.) I'm also going out of my way to take foreign language at a different school. Would they really reject me if I was one science lab off of the requirement? (Keep in mind that I've taken 5 science classes so far, which is more than usual) And I noticed a lot of the requirements say 3 years of Social Studies. Does History count as Social Studies too? I took 1 year of Global Studies and 2 of American History.

I know that was long! I'm just stressed. Any help that you would have to offer would be appreciated.

  1. Looks like you are stressing out over an issue that is not as complicated as you may think.

While it is true that many of the private colleges do have high requirements, this just doesn't apply for state colleges that the majority of college students go to.  While your high school grades can affect your ability to get scholarships for college, your previous slacking early on will not hurt your eligibility. Upon entry many colleges will have you take tests that cover different fields such as math, foreign language, and reading/vocabulary, these are placement tests that do not limit you from getting but but help them determine which classes to put you in. Also no, having no foreign language classes in high school will not keep you out from a state college.

The limiting factors is being able to afford to attend and keeping your grades high enough to pass/not be kicked out. Before you discredit these schools, the level of education and success you receive from a state college depends on how willing you are to learn.

  2. I'll be honest, I didn't read the second part of your question, but I can say this:

You can calculate your current/projected GPA by adding your quality points and dividing them by the number of hours you've completed. If you need to know what grades you need to make to get what you want, calculate the minimum number of quality points you need.

  3. Alright, lets see. Are you going to Emory? Well, yes, get those foreign language classes done and out of your way. Depending on what grade you're in, you could take the foreign languages last two years, a little bit easier against all those hard academic classes you'll have to be taking. Bio and Chem are lab sciences, I think, so you'll be fine for the 1-2 years requirement. I'm sure you've boosted you're GPA a ton with the A's & B's (good job btw). (A's & B's GPA is usually around 3.8 or 3.9) I'm not so sure about high school history. Um, you would take "other social studies" like government or civics and you would need 1-2 history classes like global studies, but then again, i'm not too sure, i don't think we're in the same state.

I hope this helped at least a little...

    :)

You'll do absolutely fine, girl, just study and focus, and keep those grades up!
