Question:

Two questions about railroads.

1. If you were to to switch working for railroad companies( i.e working for UP then for BNSF), the money you get after retirement is the money you paid over your entire career? (Let me ask it like this. There won't be two sources of retirement income even if you worked for two different companies, correct?)

2. What would be, in your opinion, the best railroad to work for out of CSX and NS(live in SC). Or is it possible to work for one of the Western Railroads(UP,BNSF)?

Any help is greatly welcomed.

  1. 1. You are correct, your retirement package is based on your years of service in the industry, not just one company.

    2. Hehe. Once railroads hire you, they spend the rest of your career trying to fire you. In all honesty, I would go with NS, they are under much more compotent management. More strict, but I think they would be a better company to work for. You could apply with one of the Western roads, but railroads prefer you not to have to relocate. And if I were you, I wouldn't either. You don't want to move out West for a job and go through training, only to be furloughed once you get out because there isn't enough work and your the low man on seniority.
