Two-time Major Champion Greg Norman – can he make a strong comeback?
Greg Norman is still one of the biggest names in the world of golf. Throughout his life he has been one of the top ranking golfers. He is one of those people who define golf.
He has spent a very impressive time of 331 weeks on the number one spot of the world golf ranking. He made a name for himself in a very short span of time.
Soon after he joined the sport as a professional golfer, he was given the name “The Great White Shark” or simply sometimes “the shark”. This nickname was a complement for Greg Norman’s aggressive golf style.
The Australian professional golfer turned professional in the year 1976. In his career, he had 88 professional wins.
Out of these 88 professional wins, 20 came from the PGA Tour, 14 from European Tour, 2 from Japan Golf Tour, 31 from PGA Tour of Australia and 23 other wins.
He has twice bagged a major title. Both the times it was at the British Open Championship - the first one was in the year 1986 and the second one was in the year 1993.
His all time best performance in the Masters tournament is when he secured the second position. In the US Open, his best finish was second and in the PGA Championship his best finish was again the second position.
For his achievements and all his awards, the 57-year-old became a part of World golf hall of fame in the year 2001.
Even now, Norman is an idol for many players. He is a light of inspiration for many young players. One player who still looks up to him is Adam Scott.
In an interview after losing a great lead at the Open Championship, he said, “Greg was my hero when I was a kid, and I thought he was a great role model, how he handled himself in victory and defeat”.
“He set a good example for us,” Scott said. “It’s tough. You don’t want to sit here and have to . . . I can’t justify anything that I’ve done out there. I didn’t finish the tournament well today. But next time . . . I’m sure there will be a next time, and
I can do a better job of it”.
Norman remained on the peek for a very long time. He has achieved so much in that time that it is very remarkable. He is 57 years of age now and he is looking for a comeback.
The last tournament he played was in Pebble beach in 2009. Ever since, he has not participated in any events.
“I don't think your competitive juices ever go away,” Norman said. “Do I have the passion to play? I enjoy playing. I don't enjoy practising. There's a big difference now”.
Analysts are of this view that Greg Norman’s time is over. He is too old to play. He cannot even make the cuts, let alone win the tournament. His good years have come to an end.
The thing is if someone has the passion, they can turn their game around, irrespective of age. Greg Norman was once the best. He can still do it. He cannot be on top again but still can squeeze a tour victory in the next couple of years.
