Question:

Two-toned cucumbers!!?

My cucumbers are growing dark green and yellow. On the top, where the plant is attached to the vine, that part is dark green, but the opposite end is a pale green to yellow in color. They are about 3-4 inches long, so I know they are not overripe. According to the picture, these cucumbers are supposed to be dark green. They are growing in a large container and get plenty of sunlight and water. What am I doing wrong??

  1. Cucumbers usually are eaten when immature. A cucumber is of highest quality when it is uniformly green, firm and crisp. Do not allow cucumbers to turn yellow. The cucumber fruit grows rapidly to harvest size and should be picked at least every other day. ♥

  2. It doesn't sound like you are doing anything wrong.  Cukes, like people, have their flaws.  If the cukes are ripe and healthy otherwise, I'm sure they are just as tasty as all-green cukes.

You will see slight discolorations in other fruits and vegetables.  Perhaps sun didn't get to the cukes as fully as the rest of the plant.  Perhaps it wasn't watered completely as it developed.  Or perhaps that's just part of the variety.

If the plant is otherwise lush and green, don't worry.  You will see this every year and will soon not worry about slight color variations.
