http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809 legend, Phil Neal thinks that an English domestic cup double will reflect a successful season for the Reds, despite their abject capitulation in the Premier League.
Liverpool, currently occupying the eighth spot in the table, are vying for a second piece of silverware this season by winning the FA Cup, having already claimed the League Cup in February.
Despite their appalling league position, the former Reds player believes that they have still got the opportunity to convert their gloomy season into a memorable one, by hoisting the FA Cup.
"Two cups would be a good return at the end of the season in my book." He told the club’s official website.
Neal, who has also managed Bolton Wanderers for seven years, capped 455 professional appearances for Liverpool from 1974 to 1985. He guided the Reds to four European Cup titles during his playing days, and remains the most famed player in the history of
the club.
Liverpool lost their way in the race for a top-four finish in 2012, which saw them secure only 3 wins in 15 league games.
The 61-year old admitted that their paltry point tally this year has been frustrating for both the players and the fans, but felt that the club has still shown signs of progress.
“We've got to feel we've made progress this season, and I certainly do. We've lifted one cup and we've got a chance of another one next month. If we can capture the FA Cup, it will be a massive plus.” He added.
Liverpool have signed a number of young players in the last two years and Neal believed that a good exposure in the cup competitions this season, has helped them hone their skills.
He remarked, “The youngsters who have been heavily involved in our cup runs, such as Spearing, Kelly and the rest, are learning all the time and they can take that into next season.”
The Englishman insisted that the major reason behind the Reds failure to challenge for a Champions League place has been their home record, and felt that they needed to change it around in the next season.
