Ok our technology teacher told us that there are two types of hulls(one usefulll in carriying weight, second usefull in speed boats cuz it has low resistance). can some1 tell me what r they.

  1. Displacement hull - not intended for speed, load carrying typically. Think trawlers, tugs, even canoes.

Planing hull - meant to rise up on top of the water at high speed. Think runabouts, ski boats, jet skis, and most high-performance fishing boats.

All the others, V, flat, shallow, tri, cat, are styles or shapes of hulls and can be, depending on design, placed in either category. As an example: my ski boat is a V-hull which is a planing hull, however I have been at the helm of a trawler that was a V-hull, displacement. It topped out at about 12knots.

The foil is a planing hull designed for very high performance, with minimum exposure to the water.

  2. V-hull would be for disbursing weight, a catamaran or hydroplane would be built for speed.

  3. Your Tech teacher has left out some possibilities for simplicity.

The two obvious answers would be:

    Displacement

    Planing

  4. For speed you want a plaining hull and for cargo you want a displacement hull.

  5. A deep V hull is faster thru rough water but less stable from side to side when stopped or at slow speeds.. A "flat bottom" is faster over calmer water, but bounces and pounds on rough water. A tri hull is more stable at low speeds or stopped and can carry more weight, A semi V hull is a trade off between a deep V and a flat bottom hull.

  6. displacement hull and planing hull

  7. I'm not educated in this stuff but from reading the news papers and paying attention to what I see I can tell you there are at least three types of hull.

Displacement - Carries substantial amount of weight.  Speed is a function of horsepower and wetted area.  Surface distribution in catamaran or trimaran method improves the ratio.

Planning - Get's above the water to eliminate friction and drag/  speed limited by imagination

Foil - Uses submersed foils to provide lift.  Waves only affect  the area interfacing the water/air boundry so these have great stability.  The load is carried by the submerged foils.  Propulsion can be in the form of an air engine or propeller mounted in the foil.

There are also hovercraft which ride on an air cushion and ground effect machines which derive lift from the air.

  8. There are two basic types of hulls - planing (speed boats)and displacement (carrying weight).  As others have indicated, there are many more than two variations on these two types of hulls - flat bottom, vee bottom, round bottom, cathedral hull, multi- hull.   These links should help you.
