Two way communications device?

Question

ok i posted a similar question before. here's the scoop, i have a friend who lives a few states over, and was wondering if there were like walkie talkies, only you texted to communicate. is this sort of devie avaliable?? general price?? will it work for such a distance?? where can i buy it?? as you can see i have lots of questions. i would really appreciate any and all help. thanks so much.

No there isn't. Why not use your cell phones?

The only way to communicate by 2-way over this distance is with a low band or HF radio.  You'd need a ham license and the radios aren't hand sized.  They would sit on a desk or table with a fairly large antenna.  

If you got a ham license, then you might be able to use hand-held radios and repeater systems.  If you know of any hams in your area, talk to some.  They're generally very friendly and helpful people.
