Question:

Two way radio license?

I just received my two way FRS/GMRS radio’s in the mail. I had to get a license from the FCC to talk over the GMRS side of the radio. I sent my $85 to the FCC for a 5 year license and got an email back saying that they received it. Can I now talk on it or do I have to wait for some kind of license in the mail??? Anyone know about how this works??? Thanks

  1. You may begin using your radios as soon as your call sign appears in the FCC database.  You do not have to wait for your paper license to arrive.  Your authority to operate will be granted as soon as your call appears.

  2. you should check the FCC web site GMRS database for your name, the call sign will be there too.

you may operate as soon as your have the call sign, you DO NOT need to have the actual license in hand.

The FCC has been really fast, usually the next day after the payment received message, you license has been issued.

  3. You can use the FRS channels, but not GMRS channels until you receive your license from the FCC.

Any time you operate a two-way radio on channels that require licensing, you must have proof of license in your posession.
