Question:

Two weak goaltender interference calls against the Red Wings?

I am neither a Wings nor a Penguins fan but even I am starting to buy into the fact that they are looking to extend this to 6 games. Fleury was A) barely touched and B) fell more because of the nice save he made than the actions of Cleary. I am all for calling penalties in OT but are these the two best they can come up with?

  1. They looked like goalie interference to me - I think they were great calls!

Seriously though...............Zetterberg had the puck, that should NOT be interference (otherwise Iginla loses a goal in round #1)

I thought the Cleary call was more of a penalty though

    LOL

I was refreshing my beer/washroom break on the Cleary incident.  I guess we're even.

  2. The CBC guys agree with you.

  3. A play or two prior to the Zetterberg penalty, the ref approached Fleury and asked him if Zetts had touched him.  He was looking for a way to penalize them.  I wasn't very happy with Dan O'Halloran, either.  I think he must have tried out for the Wings and didn't make it.  My brother called me a homer.  Jerk.  ;-)

  4. The calls were correct, they were goalie interference. HOWEVER, those types of calls should not be made when the cup is on the line. The whistles should be put away for all but COMPLETELY obvious penalties such as tripping.

  5. I disagree with you on the first call, not only did he deliberately run into Fleury, he kicked him with his skate.  The second call I agree, it was weak.  However, the Redwings have been consistently going into Fleury the entire series.  During the playoffs in 91 and 92, they were calling interference quite often.

  6. The refs should have brought out the "RED Cards"

    Penalty kicks...

Agreed Lube, just pitiful calls. Now you can't crash the net for rebounds?

  7. It was amazing that for refs who obviously swallowed the whistle when Fleury was playing interference in the goalie no-go zone in the final minutes of the 3rd period started calling c**p in the OT.  How the heck does this help attract casual fans?  Guess we can say this is the end of Bettman's mistake in trying to s***w with the NHL.  New NHL my rear end!

For those who don't know the interference I talked about, the puck went into the area where the goalie can't play it.  However, Fleury decided to come out, not play the puck, and box-out the Wings player trying to get the puck.  I take it I must be wrong that if the goalie can't play the puck, he can't set a pick for his team.  Or, more likely, the refs just suck!

  8. I thought the second one was worse.

Wait a minute why would you take the officials side....Oh yeah..Part of the problem with the games, you d**n officials.Should be extinct with the glowing puck.

  9. Good ref are hard to find.

  10. Yeah both of those calls were mega weak, especially the one against Cleary. Where do they expect him to go when he's leaned over protecting the puck at full speed, putting a shot on goal, and getting backchecked by a Pens defenseman??

On the other hand though, Fleury is playing like a maniac.

  11. I honestly think that the calls might have had more to do with the refs drawing a line in the sand. Maybe it is the league whatever, but if you think back to some earlier games where the goalies got hit behind the net or outside the crease, it might just be a little of the example, "We aren't putting up with any of this," sort of thing by the refs. Whatever it was, on the Canadian channel, Hockey Night in Canada, the commentators couldn't agree on whether the Cleary call was good or not. Mind you, one of the commentators was a goalie in the NHL for the Pens a few years ago. The other interference call was at an inconvenient time for me. I can't comment. But the Cleary thing seemed a little extreme, he was falling when he was hit, right?

  12. The first one really sucks, he was after the puck, not the goalie. the second one kind of looked like he shoved him down with the stick to me, but I'm not sure.  One thing I do know for sure, is that the last half of this game has been the best I've seen in years, and even the Die hard Wings fan that I am, if the Pens take it tonight, they've earned it. They are playing hard with tired guys.

  13. i know. i saw fleury fall over like a flower on the cleary one...i think he got marc-a's feet, but w/e he was outta the crease a little bit.

and that hank one was funny, but i thought it shoulda been a call.

anything to force a next game. i can't believe they haven't scored. there's a wall of red infront of osgood, and 1/2 pens player(s).

hey let's keep soccer out of this. it's not all diving/play acting. and it's good fleury has a little osgood in him. :P i know lubers. i agree on the weak factor, but there was interference...there's actually been a couple missed interference calls by the refs in the 3rd mostly that could've benefited either team but oh well. the pens didn't score. show's who's the better team.
