Two years gone; John Wall of the Washington Wizards still learning the ways of the NBA
It has been two years since John Wall stepped into the NBA as the number 1 draft pick. Much was expected from the 20 year old at that time. But since then it has been a career full of inconsistent performances.
Wall, who played one season at College with the Kentucky Wildcats, was perhaps regarded as the most ready player to arrive in the NBA, since the advent rise of LeBron James.
He joined the Washington Wizards and was hoped to rebuild the struggling team but two years have gone by and the Wizards are still looking to rebuild their organization. With many players leaving the team, since Wall`s arrival,
it has been a tough road so far.
Wall, who is known for quick his quick paced offense and his explosiveness to get to the rim was named the NBA Rookie of the Month, 4 months in a row in his first year. In his second year, he was expected to come out stronger but
it has been very hard to spot any improvement in his game since his arrival at the Capital.
Wall statistics this season so far have been 16.5 points and 7.7 assists, which are not very different from his rookie season in which he averaged 16.4 points and 8.0 assists.
It is not like Wall lacks the understanding to improve. It is because of the fact that he has seen almost the entire roster changed in his two years which has restricted him to get on a comfortable level with his team. The other
significant factor in Wall`s underdevelopment has been the lack of presence of a veteran figure in the Wizard`s roster who could show Wall how to hold his own in a league full of star players.
The biggest setback in Wall`s game has been his inability to become a good shooter. He has only been an average shooter in his career shooting 41.4% from the field and has relied much on his speed to get most of his points.
In his two years in the league, Wall has shown spark at some stages which portrays him as a good point guard in the league. He has excellent vision and has been able to create good opportunities for his team mates but the inability
of the Wizards to keep a consistent line around him has been the major cause behind Wall`s ineffectiveness so far.
In the upset win over the Chicago Bulls a night ago, Wall hit some clutch free throws to help his team snatch a comeback win against the team, which has the best record in the league. He finished the game with 16 points and 5 assists.
But, he still has a lot to learn and as his career goes on, he has to improve his shooting from the perimeter.
With so much promise at such a young age, he still has a long way to go.
