Ty Lawson agrees to four year contract extension with Denver Nuggets worth $48 million – NBA News
The Denver Nuggets made one of the most important decisions for the franchise when they decided to give Ty Lawson a four year contract extension.
Lawson, 24, recently tweeted that he and the Nuggets had finalized a contract extension that would see him in the Nuggets uniform for another four years. Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports later tweeted that the deal was for $48 million.
“It Looks like im going to be a nugget for another 4 yrs. Thanks to the Kronke family, Masai, nuggets fans and everybody 4 believing in me,” tweeted Lawson.
The news comes as a pleasant surprise for the Nuggets roster as well as the fans. After the acquisition of Andre Iguodala and with the work veteran head coach George Karl had done with the team, they are one of the dark horses in the Western Conference and have generated a great deal of excitement about them in recent months. The Nuggets pushed the Los Angeles Lakers to seven games in first round of the playoffs last season, and are looking like an even better team with Iguodala in the roster.
Lawson is regarded as a future star who has been critical in the recent success the Nuggets have achieved. He was being regarded as one of the key pieces if the Nuggets wanted to make a contending team, and his extension shows that the franchise is serious about the future. With Lawson signed as well, the Nuggets have Danilo Galinari, JaVale McGee and Wilson Chandler and Ty Lawson locked down for the next few seasons.
Andre Iguodala is going to be a free agent next summer and his addition on a long contract could be just what the Nuggets need to take them to the next level. Plus, they have Kenneth Faried who was one of the most impressive rookies of the past NBA season.
Lawson averaged 16.4 points and 6.6 assists per game last season, but more importantly he showed the characteristics of a leader during the Nuggets playoff games. If the Nuggets want to become a true playoff contender in the Western Conference, they are going to need Lawson to become an even bigger leader in the team and rise up to the challenge. Now that the uncertainty about his future is gone, Lawson has the opportunity to be a part of a great franchise, one that is looking better as each day passes.
