Ty Lawson on song as Denver Nuggets defeat San Antonio Spurs 99 – 94 – NBA Recap
An efficient display from point guard Ty Lawson helped the Denver Nuggets put one over the San Antonio Spurs on Sunday. The Spurs toiled hard but were always second best in the game as the Nuggets produced a composed performance to win 99 – 94.
Lawson pulled all the strings for Denver on the night and narrowly missed out on a triple-double. He finished the game with 22 points, team high, 11 assists, game high, and 9 rebounds. Lawson’s show at the heart of Denver’s effort helped the side immensely.
Al Harrington came off the bench for 16 points, Arron Afflalo had 14 while Andre Miller, Corey Brewer and Kenneth Faried also made it into double digits.
Veteran point guard Tony Parker led the charge for San Antonio. Parker had 25 points, the game high, to go along with 7 assists. Tim Duncan scored 14 and had 9 rebounds while Kawhi Leonard came off the bench for 13 points.
Denver started off aggressively, going on an 11 – 2 run from the jump ball. Although the Spurs recovered and clawed back at the deficit, it was an uphill battle from then on. Nuggets were able to keep them at an arm’s length throughout and finished the first
period at 25 – 17.
The second quarter saw another strong start from the away side. Nuggets went 9 – 5 to open, the score 34 – 22. A 6 – 0 run later stretched their advantage to 40 – 24. San Antonio responded with a 5 – 2 jolt, and soon had a furious 16 – 2 rally that took
them to within a point, 46 – 45. The Nuggets though held on till halftime, going into the break at 49 – 45.
The Spurs levelled the scores after the break at 49 – 49, but that was as far as they would go. The Nuggets were able to hold them off throughout the 3rd quarter to finish in the lead, 75 – 71.
The last 12 minutes followed a similar script; the Spurs furiously attacking but the Nuggets able to reply in kind, thus holding them at bay. San Antonio got close on more than one occasion but Denver always seemed to have an answer. They rode out for a
99 – 94 win, much to the disappointment of the AT&T Center crowd.
