Ty Lawson set to land bumper deal with Denver Nuggets – NBA Update
The Denver Nuggets bowed out in the first round of the playoffs, against Western Conference giants the Los Angeles Lakers. Nuggets though pushed Los Angeles all the way to 7 games and a standout performer for their playoffs campaign was point guard Ty Lawson.
Lawson was terrific throughout the season and exploded in the playoffs; raising his stock and helping the team grow as well. Now a leader of the Nuggets, the player is in line to receive a new bumper deal.
On Sunday the Nuggets vice president of basketball operations, Masai Ujiri hinted that the franchise has singled out Lawson as one to lead them in the future. Ujiri was confident that Lawson will grow into an even more formidable player and the Nuggets needed
him in Denver.
"He's going to be a big part of the Denver Nuggets. We're excited. Ty is going to grow even more. He made a little jump, and he'll continue to make jumps as he gets older."
This was Lawson’s first season with the Nuggets as a regular starter as the player was preferred over veteran point guard Andre Miller. Miller and Lawson actually formed a good tandem, ensuring that the Nuggets always had a potent playmaker on the court.
The player says he is happy with the Nuggets and hopefully will get an extension this summer.
"It's definitely a goal. I want to be here long term. I'm pretty sure my agent and Masai (Ujiri, the Nuggets' executive vice president of basketball operations) will talk this summer." Lawson said in an interview to the Denver Post.
Ty’s play benefitted the whole team especially as Denver’s roster was full of young, inexperienced players who did have great talent. One such player was guard Arron Afflalo, the back court partner for Lawson.
"He was amazing all year long and when the playoffs came around, he got even better," Afflalo said of his backcourt mate. "I don't see any stop in his growth. He'll be much better next season."
Ty still has a year left on his current deal and it is being suggested that Denver might hand out a 5-year contract to secure his services for the foreseeable future.
