Ty Lawson sizzles as Denver Nuggets storm past Phoenix Suns 118 – 107 – NBA Recap
The Denver Nuggets produced a strong display on Saturday to beat the Phoenix Suns 118 – 107. The Nuggets were behind at one point at the US Airways Center but stormed back to gain a double digit victory in the end over the Suns.
Ty Lawson was in supreme form for the Nuggets as the point guard out performed everyone on the court, including legendary Suns’ talisman Steve Nash. Lawson recorded a solid double-double with game high 29 points and 10 assists to lead Denver to victory.
Nash spent lesser time on the court, but still managed game high 13 assists.
Lawson admitted after the game that he played with extra fire in his belly, but revealed that it wasn’t because he was up against Nash. Ty had a lot of admiration for Steve; it was actually the Suns whom he had a bone to pick with.
"Nothing against Steve Nash; he's definitely one of my idols," Lawson said.
"Maybe against the Phoenix organization, because they picked someone else in front of me when I came out of the draft. So that is probably the only added motivation I have."
The overall performance from the Nuggets was pretty good, which delighted head coach George Karl.
"An incredible road win..never going under 10 points (the Nuggets' lead late in the game)...a smart game, a complete game.”
Kenneth Faried had a strong double-double for the Nuggets, scoring 18 and hauling down 14 boards. Arron Afflalo scored 19 points and 3 other Denver players got into double digits.
For the Suns, Shannon Brown top scored with 28 points and he had 6 boards. Marcin Gortat also played well for his 18 points and 11 rebounds.
The game started off at a brisk pace with both sides going at it early on. The baskets came quick and neither team looked like backing down in a high scoring, fast paced first quarter. At the end of the period, the Suns were ahead at 34 – 30.
Denver redressed that in the next segment as they clamped down a bit on the Suns offence. Phoenix managed 24 points in the period, and the Nuggets scored 30 as they went into the interval just ahead at 60 – 58.
A 9 – 2 burst to coming out of halftime by the Nuggets set the tone for the next third frame. Denver took control of the game in this period, building on their slight advantage before the interval as they stretched the lead into double figures.
The fourth started with Denver up by 13 and that lead proved too much for the home side, who couldn’t make many inroads despite a buoyant home support. The game ended 118 – 107 to the visitors.
