  1. My son learned to tie his in 1st grade.  I never bought the velcro shoes because I didnt like the way they looked and neither did he so every time I had to tie his shoe I had him watch me.  It took a lot of practice but he finally got it.  As far as girls being faster his sister was almost 8 before she mastered it.  When he starts school and sees kids doing it on their own it will motivate him to do the same and before you know it he will have it down.

  2. Are you sure this isn't for you, moron?

  3. Ha.

My son is turning 7 today and only ever had one pair of shoes without velcro (and then he was 4, and couldn't do it).

I'm not going to stress out about it.  He likes the velcro; I like the velcro; and I'm sure if he had to at this point he could learn in a day.

  4. My son was 5 when he figured it out. We went over and over it until both of us hated tying shoes, but then i stopped pushing him. I just let him play with one of his baby brothers' shoes and practice on his own. He messed with that for about 3 days and finally got it. Once he figured it out i haven't had to tie a shoe sence. Oh yeah and dont put your kid in velcro, you wouldn't wear it why should he. :)

  5. It was one of the things that they were to accomplish in Kindergarten. My second son was taught in one day by the teacher that stayed with him at the bus stop.  We had worked with him for several days before. She had an easy way to do it and he caught on to that way right away.  Have you tried the easy bunny ears method using two loops and just tying them together.  I think that tying shoes is a very important skill to learn and I refuse to buy the velcro shoes just because I don't want to take the time to teach him.  I wouldn't want to be 8 and not know how to tie my shoes.

  6. Velcro is fine - some very high end shoes are now velcro  - he should learn at this point for sports...no one will be around to tie his basketball sneakers, cleats etc...

  7. When I was in kindergarten, we had a list of nine learning milestones that would be marked with stickers when we accomplished them. The last one was "I can tie my shoes." By the end of the school year, only me and one boy had accomplished it.

In other words, all kids should learn by the time they are six or seven, but don't get too impatient before that. All kids learn at different rates, but if your son gets to third grade and still doesn't know how, you might have a problem.

  8. sometime during the first grade year is the goal. Its not a big deal if your son can't do it yet, though.

  9. My son is going to be 6 in May, he's in kindergarten.  He still doesn't know how to tie his shoes.  He has never owned a pair of tie shoes.  I've just always bought shoes that he can do himself, and really now he loves to wear the old style of Vans that slip on.  He has 4 pairs and wears them everyday.  So, i'm not going to stress about it.  Even though his grandparent makes comments like ' Hasn't your mom taught you to tie your shoes yet?'  That bugs me...but when he needs to know he will figure it out.

P.S. My daughter learned just before she turned 6.  And with her, i worked w/ her on it alot.  It took a couple weeks.  I haven't worked w/ my son on it at all yet.

  10. my son was six and in kindergarten his teacher had a I can tie my shoes club and by the middle of the year every one wanted to be in the club and learned at home and from other kids in the class.
