Question:

Tylenol PM while pregnant?

I have had sleeping issues since I found out I was pregnant. In my first trimester..I just had to deal with it, but once I reached my second trimester...my Dr. said it was okay to take Tylenol PM. Try for a couple weeks and then see if I could go without. Well, it's been four weeks and I can't seem to go without during the week, but on the weekends I don't take them. I have noticed that the baby moves less during the week while I'm taking them. Has anyone else experienced this?

I'm going to the Dr. this Friday (9/5), but just thought I would ask first.

Thanks.

  1. my doctor told me its perfectly safe!! I'm sure your fine and so is baby

  2. I've always been told not to take anything to help you sleep like that, but I dunno .....

  3. It is benedryl in tylenol pm, so it is likely also making your baby drowsy. It's really up to you, but I wouldn't chance taking so much, their little systems are a lot different than ours.

  4. My ob/gyn said anything by tylenol (including tylenol pm), was safe during pregnancy. I, too, have been hit with insomnia, but try my best to avoid taking anything unless I absolutely have to, afraid I'd begin a habit. Have you tried warm milk? Chamomile tea? Warm bath? Tiring yourself out? I find excercising before bedtime, (about 2 hours before), then taking a warm shower, really sets me up for bedtime! Yes, tylenol products are safe, but remember, whatever you expose yourself to, you also expose baby too! You don't want him/her needing a tylenol toddy after birth! Hee, hee, hee!

  5. Hey there, I was the same way, I would get up at 1:30am every single night, go to the washroom and end up watching a movie, or coming to play on the computer until around 4 or 5 am. Then head to work all day.  I never did take anything for it, and didn't actually mention it to my doctor,  but i was told that I could take regular tylenol if needed for something, but wasn't told I could take pm, all doctors say different stuff sadly.  I guess I just dealt with the sleepless nights and almost fell asleep at work numerous times! oops! hehe.  It never did get better, until I had Kacey.  Now I'm getting sleep, now that she's here! I don't think all that stuff like warm milk, baths, etc, is gonna work for you.  Never worked for me.  See what your doctor says but I think you may have to just suffer it out sadly!  Sucks, but yay baby soon!

Btw, Our anniversaries are coming up, yay for ONE year! :)

  6. Acetomenophen and Diphenhydramine are the active ingredients in Tylenol PM and both are perfectly safe during pregnancy.

  7. I took it occasionally while I was pregnant. It did help, but I tried not to take it too often. Like any sleep aide, your body can become dependent on it to sleep. Here are some other things that I tried and helped me. Try some other things, like some warm decaf. tea, broth, or milk. You can try a warm(not hot) bath before bed. Read a book in bed for a little bit b4 you go to sleep or a little tv. But nothing with too much action in it, the news or heart wrenching dramas. It is too mind stimulating.  Make sure you aren't taking anything withcaffeinee in it (soda, coffee, chocolate, etc) 6 hours b4 bed. Don't nap during the day. Develop a bed time routine and stick to it. Don't lie in bed tossing and turning, if you can't sleep get up and do something. It may tire you out enough to send you back to bed. But don't worry, your not sleeping will not hurt your baby.  Good luck!

  8. I know you can take tyleonly while pregnant but not sure about the ingredient in the tylenol pm. Did you as a nurse or pharmacist before taking? Maybe you should call your local pharmacy, the pharmacist can tell if that is something you can take or not. And make sure you let your doc know about the movement of your baby. Dont take anymore until you see the doctor. Not being able to sleep while pregnant is normal.
