Tyler Chatwood shines as Los Angeles Angels defeat New York Mets 7-3 – MLB Update
The American League’s Los Angeles Angels’ starter Tyler Chatwood crushed the New York Mets’ batting line-up to take his club to a 7-3 triumph in the rubber game at Citi Field, New York on Sunday, June 19 to clinch the series 2-1.
The 21-year-old rookie pitcher struck-out four batters without allowing any run over his seven innings spell to take his fourth win of the season. The right-hand pitcher allowed four walks and four no-score hits on 117 pitches, out of which he tossed 69
strikes to complete his game.
"I think I had better command out of the stretch than the windup today, so that helped out a lot," said Chatwood, "Yeah, it wasn't planned, but thank goodness I had better command coming (out of the) stretch."
This win not only took him to a 4-4 win-loss record with a 3.84 ERA after 14 starts in 2011 season, but it also helps him break his three-game losing streak. He had lost three consecutive games, two by Kansas City Royals and one by Tampa Bay Rays.
Vernon Wells made two RBIs and launched one homer to help his club in getting their 35th win of the season.
It was his day as he also received full support from the batters. Vernon Wells drove in a single in the top of the first inning to provide his starter one run lead. Then in the top of the second inning, Erick Aybar hit a line drive RBI triple to take the
score into commanding 4-0 position.
The Mets’ starter Jonathan Niese then managed to escape in the top of the third and fourth without allowing any run. In the fifth inning though, he allowed another RBI single to Wells and then handed over the ball to reliever Daniel Carrasco. Daniel tossed
fastballs and managed to complete this inning without allowing any run.
Niese allowed five runs on eight hits over only four innings.
"Just seemed like they were on every pitch I threw," Niese said. "They kind of got to me early. They were aggressive, swinging at first-pitch fastballs. That triples down the line kind of hurt, too."
In the top of the sixth inning, Jeff Mathis launched first homer off the Mets’ reliever Manny Acosta, who replaced Carrasco just before a hit, for one-run to take the lead to 6-0. Wells again came into action with a 389-feet long one-run homer off Acosta
to take the lead to 7-0 irrefutable position.
The Angels allowed all three runs in the last inning when closer Bobby Cassevah tossed some wobbly pitches to the Mets’ wounded batters. He gave the first run to Jose Reyes and then allowed Justin Turner to score. He yielded a third and last run to Carlos
Beltran.
