Tyler Clary improves Olympic mark of Men’s 200m backstroke – London Olympic Games
Tyler Clary of USA improved the Olympic record of Men’s 200m backstroke on day six of the swimming events at the 2012 London Olympic Games in London Aquatics Centre on Thursday, August 2.
Clary faced strong contest from his teammate, Ryan Lochte and Irie Ryosuke of Japan in the initial three laps of the race but overpowered their efforts in the final lap and reached the podium for gold medal.
Lochte, who was the top contender for gold medal, dictated terms to his competitors in the initial 150 metres of the swim, but failed to match their efforts in the final lap and finished third.
Clary remained just one stroke ahead of his following swimmer and tapped the finishing wall in a new Olympic record time of 1 minute and 53.41 seconds.
His furious efforts remained 0.37 seconds ahead of Irie, who outperformed Lochte on the finishing end and secured silver medal with the timing of 1 minute and 53.78 seconds.
Lochte stayed 0.16 seconds slower from his former finisher and hit the finishing blockade with the timing of 1 minute and 53.94 seconds for bronze medal.
The bronze medallist was followed by Radoslaw Kawecki of Poland and Fenglin Zhang of China, who involved each other in a neck-to-neck swim for fourth best position. The duo tried hard to surpass each other over the finishing blockade for fourth position
but failed to do so.
They stayed one and a half body length apart and clocked an identical effort of 1 minute and 55.59 seconds for fourth position.
Subsequently, sixth fastest spot of the race was secured by Kazuki Watanabe of Japan, who remained two body lengths slower from overpowering his foregoing finisher and tapped the wall with a timing of 1 minute and 57.03 seconds for sixth position.
Watanabe was chased by Yakov Toumarkin of Israel, who ended seventh in the event with an effort of 1 minute and 57.62 seconds. Eighth position of the race was obtained by Mitch Larkin of Australia, who clocked an effort of 1 minute and 58.02 seconds.
Furthermore, Clary was delighted with his gold finish in the distant backstroke event.
