Tyler Clippard gives up homerun as Washington Nationals edged out by Los Angeles Dodgers 6-7 – MLB
Relief pitcher Tyler Clippard allows a home-run in the last inning as the Washington Nationals are edged out by the Los Angeles Dodgers 6-7 at Nationals Park, Washington, D.C. in the second game of the three match series on September 19, 2012.
The win in the first match of the doubleheader had given the Nationals confidence which was reason enough to believe that they will put up a great performance in the second game.
However far from this, they struggled, allowing Dodgers a substantial lead right in the beginning of the game.
In a span of first four innings, Dodgers leaped to a six-run lead which was apparently strong enough to deliver them the victory.
On the other hand, just like in the first match, Nationals’ offence found it hard to connect hits and post runs on the scoreboard.
For the same reason the lead of the Dodgers remained intact for the most part of the game. Thus, it seemed they will rout the Nationals and embrace an easy victory.
In the bottom of the eighth, Washington launched an effective upsurge. By scoring six runs in one inning alone, they tied the score and thwarted the Dodgers as a result.
Washington almost turned the tables and the victory which looked nearly impossible earlier all of a sudden appeared to be a highly likely outcome of the game.
Nonetheless, Dodgers showed resilience and reclaimed the lead in the ninth.
Washington’s starter John Lannan was hammered for plenty on Wednesday. He leaked six runs in little more than three innings. He will be disheartened after being roughed up. As he comes to start next time his confidence will probably be low.
Clippard squandered the opportunity to win for the Nationals when he gave up a home-run in the last inning.
"I can't remember ever putting a ball in that spot and getting hurt like that in my whole career," said Clippard. "It's a tough one to swallow, but nothing I can do about it now. We're not shooting for a playoff spot. We're shooting to win a division. So
regardless if we won tonight or not, that's not really where we want to be."
Nationals will be looking to come up stronger in the next game. It will be exciting to see whether they can clinch a series victory.
