Tyler Farrar seeks podium at the Scheldeprijs 2012
Tyler Farrar of Team Garmin-Barracuda is targeting the Flanders Classics Scheldeprijs as the next big goal of his 2012 season.
The Belgian succeeded during the 2010 version of the race and is determinant to make it his second victory at the event.
The cyclist believes that his current form is perfect to claim the top podium spot during the 100th edition of the race.
Farrar’s first and only victory of the season came during the first stage of the Tour of Qatar. He went onto claim the second overall position at the race after the final general classifications.
The 27-year-old joined the American side, Team Garmin-Barracuda in 2008 and is currently assisting the side for the fifth consecutive season.
Tyler rode brilliantly in the past season and secured two stages of the Tour de France along with a second stage victory at the Tirreno-Adriatico 2012.
He occupied the top spot at the Trofeo Palma de Mallorca, Trofeo Cala Millor and finished third at the Dwars door Vlaanderen and the Gent-Wevelgem in the past season.
While commenting on the coming race, he told Cyclingnews, “I won there two years ago, so I know I can do it”.
“It’s true that my focus has been more on the cobblestones and on the classics than it has been on sprinting but I can still sprint pretty well, so we’ll see”.
“It might still depend on what the weather does tomorrow,” Farrar warned. “It’s a sprinter’s race but sometimes it’s not a pure sprinter’s race”.
“If it’s windy, there can be some crosswinds out on the farm roads, which can make things a bit more interesting,” he concluded.
Three time winner (2007, 2008 and 2011) of the race Mark Cavendish will miss this year’s event because of the birth of his first daughter.
However, Farrar will still have to face a stiff competition from Andre Greipel, Tom Boonen and Marcel Kittel at the Belgian race.
The race started back in 1907 with Maurice Leturgie as its first winner. Piet Oellibrandt and Mark Cavendish hold the honour of the most number of wins at the contest.
The 2012 version of the race is scheduled on April 4th and Tyler Farrar is determined to make full use of his supreme form at the race.
