Tyler Farrar wins the penultimate stage of the USA Pro Cycling Challenge 2012
Tyler Farrar of Team Garmin-Sharp continued dominating the USA Pro Cycling Challenge and secured his second stage victory at the event.
He completed the 189.7 kilometre race in an impressive time of 3 hours, 58 minutes and 27 seconds and restricted the race favourites.
Taylor Phinney of Team BMC occupied the second position with Alessandro Bazzana of Team Type 1-Sanofi, Alexander Candelario of Team Optum p/b Kelly Benefit Strategies and Hugo Houle of Team Spidertech Powered By C10 securing the next four positions.
"I was really motivated today because it's Mike Creed's hometown and he was my Madison partner when I was 18," Farrar said. "So this one's for you, buddy”.
Vincenzo Nibali of Team Liquigas-Cannondale aims to win a stage in the current weak but his hopes of the stage win were shattered as he finished the race at the 92nd spot.
"I came in after the Tour de France a little tired and didn't know how I'd feel," he said.
"I'm feeling a little better every day. Today was a day for Caruso, though I thought I'd give it a go”.
“In Colorado, the people are surprisingly excited about the sport of cycling, and I want to show respect to that. I find if I can win a stage it will be a very prestigious result".
Phinney previously won the opening stage of the race and his stage 5 victory has really made him a favourite contender for the point’s classifications.
He also secured stages at the Tour of Utah, Giro d’Italia, Tour of Qatar along with the second place finishes at the Scheldeprijs and the Tour of Qatar 2012.
Sergey Firsanov of Team RusVelo succeeded at the first and the second sprints of the race while Tyler Farrar of Team Garmin-Sharp winning the third sprint.
Taylor Phinney, Hugo Houle, Gavin Mannion, George Bennett and Joseph Lloyd Dombrowski were the top five young riders on the day.
Tejay van Garderen of Team BMC is leading the stage 5 classifications with Christian Vande Velde of Team Garmin-Sharp at the second position.
Ivan Rovny of Team RusVelo is 6 seconds behind at the third position whereas, Levi Leipheimer and Janez Brajkovic securing the fourth and the fifth positions in the respective order.
