Tyler Greene of the St. Louis Cardinals may not be playing at second base – MLB News
The St. Louis Cardinals’ general manager John Mozeliak has ruled out the possibility of Tyler Greene playing at second base. This he stated while speaking to the reporters on the future prospect.
"We do want to see Tyler Greene get a strong opportunity [at second base]," Mozeliak said. "We look at his athleticism and what he's capable of doing [and] seeing that for a large volume or 150 games would be interesting to us."
Greene has not succeeded in winning accolades from the team or the fans owing to his almost uninterrupted and regular injuries. The injuries have rendered him unable to demonstrate the potential brilliance he might have possessed as a player.
For Mozeliak, even if not an adequate substitute, there is someone to replace Greene. He referred to Daniel Descalso who he thought will be provided an opportunity at second base.
With the two year experience that Greene has got on his credentials, he could hardly appear in 58 games last season. As stated earlier, he has had a string of injuries that has sharply impacted his performance.
Remaining in 104 at-bats, he scored 22 runs with 22 hits to his credit last year, having had 11 RBIs with a modest .212 average and a .288 SLG. A look at such a record would hardly be satisfying for a player in the Major League.
Nonetheless, the team does not want to dispose the player at this point in time.
Greene, on the other hand, is also optimistic about the future. With Spring Training around the corner and the lessons he has learnt in the last two years, Greene intends to do better this year.
"I'm looking forward to this year," said Greene. "I've learned a lot over the last couple years. [I'm] just really looking forward to coming to Spring Training ready, and using what I've learned the last couple years to my advantage."
With the career average of .218, Greene has a long way to go. The fact that he has been able to play only 150 games since his debut in 2009 speaks volume of how much baseball he has missed.
