Tyler Moore smacks home run as Washington Nationals outclass New York Mets 5-3 - MLB Update
Pinch hitter Tyler Moore hits a two-run homer in the seventh as he helps the Washington Nationals outclass the New York Mets 5-3 at Citi Field, New York on September 11, 2012 in the second match of the three game series.
Nationals struck 14 hits in the match which explains their offensive dominance against Mets’ starter R.A. Dickey on Tuesday. By the dint of home-runs coming off their batters on Tuesday, they disallowed Dickey from recording his 19th win of the
season.
By the time Mets added two runs in the fifth, they cut in to the one run lead of the Nationals. From there onward they needed to keep the Nationals from bouncing back.
However as Washington’s batters were regularly producing hits, it was difficult for them to contain runs.
No wonder Nationals managed a home-run in the seventh and reclaimed the lead.
Just to make sure the Mets cannot sneak a victory by launching a counter-attack in the last inning, they posted two more runs in the top of the ninth. Hence the game was taken out of the hands of the Mets effectively.
While starting for the Nationals, Jordan Zimmermann gave up two runs in five innings. He struck-out six. Relief pitcher Tom Gorzelanny earned the win as he restricted the opposition when Washington had the lead in the game.
Offensively centre fielder Bryce Harper stood out for Washington on Tuesday. He connected four hits in five at-bats.
"I think I was fortunate to get a couple knocks tonight," Harper said. "You can't really get any advice on that guy. He's got a knuckleball. That's what he throws. You either hit it or you don't."
The home-run that the pinch hitter Moore thrashed on Tuesday was decisive in the match as it provided the team a lead which remained intact until the end.
Nationals’ manager Davey Johnson is heartened by the fact that Harper connected knucklers in the match.
"Now he realizes he can hit a knuckleball," Johnson said.
With every passing day, the Nationals are becoming more competitive. They are nearly perfect in every department of play at the moment except for an occasional downfall by their offence.
Watching them playing in the post-season will be fascinating for the fans.
