Tyler Seguin leads Boston Bruins to 5-4 win over Toronto Maple Leafs -NHL Update
Toronto tried hard to make a comeback and overcome Boston late in the third period but Tyler Seguin’s two goals of the night were enough to give Bruins a comfortable lead as they downed the Maple Leafs, 5-4, Tuesday night, March 6, 2012, at the sold-out
Air Canada Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
Seguin has managed to emerge as a leader for the Bruins club and being one of the younger players on board, the former second overall draft pick has achieved big in front of a veteran line-up.
The 20-year-old played in his first postseason last year and could potentially be the deciding factor for Boston when they go into defending their Stanley Cup championship with a little over a month remaining.
Maple Leafs are getting further away from their postseason dreams day-by-day and Toronto lost its seventh matchup of the past eight. Having such a record at this time in the 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season is never a good sign.
It was Randy Carlyle’s first matchup in Toronto as the new head coach of the Maple Leafs team, which definitely did not go the way he had planned.
Carl Gunnarsson added the first of the night 3:01 into the opening period, giving Toronto the lead which was short lived as Boston’s Jordan Caron levelled it a little over 10 minutes later.
The second period was intense as John-Michael Liles kicked off the scoring in the next 20 minutes with his fifth of the season on a power play 57 seconds in.
Tyler Seguin and Chris Kelly added two straight for Boston only 41 seconds apart while Phil Kessel replied with the equaliser on another added man advantage nearly midway through.
Jordan Caron and Tyler Seguin potted their second goals of the night in the final minutes of the second, ultimately giving Bruins the gap to take the match.
Mikhail Grabovski added another for Toronto with less than seven minutes to go in the final period of regulation, after which Boston luckily managed to keep Toronto out of the net despite giving two extra penalties as well.
Boston killed a two-game losing streak and have the next two at home against Buffalo Sabres on Thursday, followed by Washington Capitals on Saturday.
Toronto Maple Leafs have the next on the road against Pittsburgh Penguins on Wednesday.
