Tyler Wright and Laura Enever enter Roxy Pro Gold Coast Quarter-finals – Surfing News
Australia’s Tyler Wright and Laura Enever walked away with top honours from their respective Round 3 heats of Roxy Pro Gold Coast, first of seven stops on the 2012 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Women’s World Tour, which went down at Snapper Rocks in Queensland, Australia, on Monday, February 27.
Facing New Zealand’s Sarah Mason and Brazil’s Silvana Lima in the opening heat of the third round, the 2011 ASP Women’s World Rookie of the Year Wright undoubtedly had a tough battle at hand.
All three surfers were equally capable of taking the win, though the local knowledge of the waves slightly tipped the scales in the favour of the young Australian surfer.
As the battle got underway in clean two-to-three foot waves, Wright capitalised on her advantage and utilised her skills to get to a heat-total of 16.20 points. The score remained unbeatable until the end to seal the fate of the battle in her favour and consequently added her to the Quarter-final line-up.
Mason finished in second place with a heat-total of 12.80 points, while Lima rounded out the third position with a two-wave total of 9.63 points.
Both Mason and Lima got relegated to Round 4 to battle it out for a place in the Quarter-finals.
The second heat pitted the 20-year-old 2012 ASP Women’s World Tour sophomore Enever against New Zealand’s Paige Hareb and the defending ASP Women’s World Champion Carissa Moore from Hawaii.
The young Australian created one of the biggest upsets of the day by prevailing over her intimidating competition with a heat-total of 16.83 points to clinch the Quarter-final spot.
“It was a good heat,” Enever said. “Paige [Hareb] got a 9.30 and Carissa (Moore) got an 8.07, and I was thinking I’ve got my work cut out for me. I just decided to wait for a good one, and I saw that wave and I did my first turn and let go and it all worked out. I got into the Semis last year and I’d love to go one or two better this year.”
Hareb finished in second place with a heat-total of 14.07 points, while the 19-year-old Moore finished in third with a two-wave total of 13.57 points, consequently getting relegated to the fourth round.
The surfing action continued at Snapper Rocks with the remaining heats of Roxy Pro Gold Coast’s Round 3 on Monday.
