Tyler Wright and Sally Fitzgibbons qualify for quarter-finals at Roxy Pro Biarritz 2012
Australia’s Tyler Wright and her fellow countryperson Sally Fitzgibbons advanced to the quarter-finals at the Roxy Pro Biarritz 2012 after emerging triumphant in their respective Round 3 heats that went down at Cote des Basques in Biarritz, France, on Friday,
July13.
Wright got the better of her compatriot Rebecca Woods and America’s Courtney Conlogue in the opening heat of Round 3 to move into the next stage of the competition while relegating her rivals to Round 4.
The second heat saw Fitzgibbons put on an impressive performance to prevail over Hawaii’s Coco Ho and America’s Lakey Peterson, forcing both her rivals to take a trip to the relegation round to surf again for a place in the quarter-finals.
Wright, current No.3 on the ASP Women’s World Tour rankings, continued her excellent run of form on the opening day of the competition by putting on an exquisite performance to down Conlogue and Woods. The 18-year-old Australian opened her account with an
excellent 9.10-point ride and backed it up with a 6.00 off her second business-wave to finish with a heat-total of 15.10 points. She seemed pretty bold during the course of the battle, even going for a massive aerial that she failed to execute successfully.
Her effort remained unbeatable until the end to seal the fate of the battle in her favour.
“I feel pretty good, it was really tricky this morning and that was good to get through that first round.” Wright said. “I’m super stoked because I don’t usually surf small waves like that, but it’s picked up now and it’s a little more suited to me so I’m
enjoying it!”
Conlogue had no plans of going down without putting up a strong fight and managed to score an 8.50 and 5.90 off her best-two waves. However, she still remained 0.70 points short of the required score, consequently having to settle for second-place finish.
Woods finished with a heat-total of 11.30 points, which included a 5.00 and 6.30-point ride, thus accompanying her American rival into the fourth round.
The second heat featured yet another exquisite performance by Fitzgibbons, current No.2 on the ASP Women’s World Tour rankings, as she earned herself a spot in the quarter-finals. The Australian surfer got off to a relatively slow start, but managed to find
a 6.40 and 7.00 off her best-two waves to finish with a heat-total of 13.40 points, which held up until the end to earn her the win.
Ho finished in second place with a heat-total of 11.55 points, comprising of a 7.25 and 4.30-point ride, whereas Peterson had to settle for a third-place finish after scoring a 3.25 and 5.10 off her best-two waves for a heat-total of 8.35 points.
