Tyler Wright continues good form at Commonwealth Bank Beachley Classic to reach Quarter-finals
Australia’s Tyler Wright managed to claim top honours in the opening heat of the Commonwealth Bank Beachley Classic’s Round 3 that kicked-off at the Dee Why point in Sydney, Australia, on Friday, April 20.
Wright took the win over her compatriot Laura Enever and France’s Justine Dupont to advance straight into the Quarter-finals while forcing her rivals to take a trip to the relegation Round 4 to surf again to advance to the next stage of the competition.
The stormy weather that had haunted the primary event site a day earlier had passed way, leaving behind a beautiful and clear sky to prevail on Friday. The prestigious Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) surfers were pumped up to put on their best
possible performances in the clean four-to-six foot waves that were on offer on the latest day of the fourth of seven stops on the 2012 ASP Women’s World Title Series.
With the conclusion of the second round and still plenty of time still left before sunset, the event organisers decided to get on with the third round of the competition.
The first heat of Round 3 pitted Wright against Enever and Dupont in a battle for the Quarter-final spot. While the non-elimination nature of the round eased the pressure on the surfers, it hardly had any effect on their level of motivation to push hard
to try and get into the final eight without having to surf in the fourth round.
Wright, the 2011 ASP Women’s World Rookie of the Year, had exhibited a formidable form on the opening day of the competition and did well to hold on to that form during her battle against Enever and Dupont. She locked her first business-wave in the opening
minutes of the heat to post a 6.00 on the score-board and soon backed it up with a 5.25-point ride to finish with a heat-total of 11.25 points. The score held up until the end to eventually earn her a convincing victory and thus secure her place into the Quarter-finals.
Enever was forced to settle for runner-up place after finishing with a heat-total of 9.40 points, which included a 6.00 and 3.40-point wave.
Dupont finished in last place after struggling to find consistency in her form. The young French surfer scored a 3.75 and 4.50 off her best-two waves to finish with a heat-total of 8.25 points.
The thrilling surfing action continued at Dee Why point with the remaining heats of the Commonwealth Bank Beachley Classic’s Round 3.
