Tyler Wright defeats Bianca Buitendag in Vans US Open of Surfing quarter-finals – Surfing news
Australia’s Tyler Wright clinched a comprehensive victory over South Africa’s Bianca Buitendag in the second quarter-final of women’s Vans US Open of Surfing, the sixth of eight stops on the 2013 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Women’s World Championship
Tour, which continued at the Huntington Beach Pier in California, America, on Saturday, July 27, 2013.
The in-form Australian surfer asserted her dominance over her rival from the get-go and eventually had a smooth sailing to victory, which served to secure her place in the semi-finals, bringing her one step closer to her third event victory this season.
“The tide’s really come in and it’s all about the carves,” Wright said. “I don’t mind it. It’s kind of tricky because there’s not really a bottom to the wave sometimes and you’ve got to just do your best. I’ve always struggled here and been trying to figure
it out. I just want to go out and surf my best in every heat and push my limits and have fun.”
The 19-year-old Wright, current No.1 on ASP Women’s World Championship rankings, had been in top-notch form since the start of 2013 and had performed consistently at majority of the events that had gone done in the past few months.
Arriving in California, she did not take too long to announce herself as a serious contender for the event title. Piercing her way through the initial rounds, she made her way into the quarter-finals, where she found herself pitted against Buitendag, who
was in a pretty good form herself.
As the battle for the semi-final spot got underway, Wright adapted quickly to the slow high-tide conditions and made some excellent wave selections to give herself an opportunity to score big. Locking her first business wave, she posted a 7.60 on the score
and later backed it up with a 7.50-point ride to get to a heat-total of 15.10 points.
Buitendag had no intention of letting Wright walk away with the win without putting up a fight. Despite her determined effort, she only managed to find a couple of scores in the six-point range of her best-two rides and consequently had to settle for a heat-total
of 12.74, which just was not enough to threaten her rival’s lead.
