Tyler Wright downs Coco Ho to move into Roxy Pro Biarritz Final
Australia’s Tyler Wright earned herself a title shot at the Roxy Pro Biarritz 2012, the latest stop on the current Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Women’s World Tour, after defeating Hawaii’s Coco Ho in the first Semi-final at La Grande Plage
in Biarritz, France, on Saturday, July 14.
The 18-year-old elite tour sophomore completely stole the show through her exquisite performance, exhibiting a class and style that one hardly expected from someone of her age.
Wright had made a solid impact in her very first year on the ASP Women’s World Tour, eventually earning the Rookie of the Year award before of her efforts. Little seemed to have changed this year as she continued to make waves and make her presence felt
despite being surrounded by seasoned and extremely skilled surfers.
She continued the momentum at Biarritz at Roxy Pro in Biarritz, easily advancing through the initial rounds to eventually reach the final stages of the competition.
Pitted against Wright in a battle for a spot in the Final was Ho, an elite tour veteran who earned her place in the semi-final stage after eliminating ASP Women’s World current No.2 Sally Fitzgibbons in the quarter-finals.
As the first Semi-final got underway, both the surfers got off to an ordinary start. The 21-year-old Hawaiian surfer drew first blood with a 4.67-point ride and later managed to add an additional 4.70 points to her account, thus finishing with a resultant
heat-total of 9.37 points.
Wright managed to adapt to the challenging conditions on hand exceptionally well. She took her time to build momentum before making a charge halfway through the heat to earn a 7.33 off her first business-wave. In the final minutes of the heat, she got hold
of another 7.33-point ride to reach a heat-total of 14.66 points, thus reaching a heat-total of 14.66 points. The effort served to seal the fate of the battle in her favour, thus taking her through into the Final.
Despite having to leave the contention for the event title after getting so close, Ho appeared pretty satisfied with her overall performance and the result she collected.
“I’m stoked it feels good to be able to get through those tough first rounds and be able to back up my last good result,” Ho said. “It was close but I’m stoked with the overall result. We’re really lucky the conditions came together for us today, ‘Grande
Plage’ offered us some really good potential and it was just a matter of positioning so we’re stoked we’re really lucky.”
The enthralling surfing action continued at La Grande Plage with the second Semi-final at Roxy Pro Biarritz 2012.
