Tyler Wright downs Laura Enever to advance into the Commonwealth Bank Beachley Classic Semi-finals
Australia’s Tyler Wright got the better of her compatriot Laura Enever in the first Quarter-final of the Commonwealth Bank Beachley Classic that resumed at Dee Why point in Sydney, Australia, on Saturday, April 21.
With her success in the Quarter-final, Wright made her way through into the Semi-finals while bringing the event to a premature end for her competitor.
The clean but challenging two-to-three foot waves gracing the primary event site on the latest day of the 2012 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Women’s World Title Series were bound to test the prestigious female surfers for their experience, skills
and perseverance. With the frequency of scoring opportunities quite low, the surfers were required to stay on their toes throughout the course of their battle for the Semi-final slot.
Wright, the 2011 ASP Women’s Rookie of the Year, had established herself as one of the most promising talent joining the ranks of the elite ASP Top 17. She continued her impressive form in the latest season of the elite tour and brought that form with her
to Dee Why point to try and register an event win. She gradually made her way through the initial rounds of the competition to eventually reach the Quarter-final, where she found herself facing Enever for the Semi-final slot.
Even though Enever had managed to reach the Quarter-finals, she had failed to do so in a convincing manner. Her performances were lacking consistency, though she had done quite well to bounce back to remain in contention for the event title. Facing Wright
at such a crucial stage of the competition was never going to be an easy battle for her, though nothing could be said with certainty.
As the first Quarter-final started, Enever got off to a flyer, locking her first business-wave to post a 7.33 on the score-board, thus grabbing an early lead and putting her rival under pressure. She immediately backed it up with a 5.17-point ride to move
to a heat-total of 12.50 points, cementing her lead even further.
Wright took her time to adjust to the conditions and gradually built momentum before launching into an impressive 7.83-point ride. Catching her second business-wave in the dying minutes of the heat, she gave it her all and successfully earned a 6.60 off
it to finish with a heat-total of 14.43 points. The score served to earn her a convincing victory over Enever, consequently confirming her place in the Semi-finals.
