Tyler Wright powers into the quarter-finals at Vans US Open of Surfing – Surfing news
Australia’s Tyler Wright successfully made it through into the quarter-finals at the Vans US Open of Surfing, the sixth of eight stops on the 2013 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Women’s World Championship Tour, after claiming top honours in her Round 3 heat, which went down at the Huntington Beach Pier in California, America, on Thursday, July 25, 2013.
The Australian surfer got the better of her fellow countryperson Laura Enever and South Africa’s Bianca Buitendag in the second heat of Round 3 to qualify into the quarter-finals. Both her rivals, however, found themselves relegated to the fourth round, where they were to surf again to earn their place in the next stage of the event.
The latest day of the event say peaky two-to-four foot waves on offer, thus creating an ideal stage for the world’s top female surfing talent to engage in thrilling battles. A huge crowd had turned up at the Huntington Beach Pier, as they anticipated a series of exquisite performances.
Wright, current No.1 on the ASP Women’s World Championship Tour rankings, had been in a formidable form since the start of the season and she had clearly brought her threatening form with her to California.
Pitted against Buitendag and Enever in a battle for the quarter-final spot, the 19-year-old Australian asserted her dominance from the get-go.
Wright collected an 8.50 off her very first wave in the heat and soon added an additional 7.17 points to her account, thus getting to a heat-total of 15.67 points. The score proved unbeatable until the end to seal the fate of the battle in her favour.
“I just wanted to catch a wave and do more surfing,” Wright said. “ I couldn’t catch a wave out there, but the tide was super high and I was expecting it to be slow. I was lucky to get that first one. I caught that one bad left towards the end of the heat and then I was lucky to get that little right at the end paddling back out.”
Buitendag finished in second place with a heat-total of 11.00 points, while Enever finished third after registered a two-wave total of 6.33 points. Both the surfers still had a chance of making it into the quarter-final.
