Tyler Wrights prevails in Round 1 of TSB Bank NZ Surf Festival featuring the Dow AgroSciences Pro
Australia’s Tyler Wright resumed her 2012 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Women’s World Tour campaign with an impressive win in her Round 1 heat at the TSB Bank NZ Surf Festival featuring the Dow AgroSciences Pro that got underway at Fitzroy Beach
in Taranaki, New Zealand, on Wednesday, April 11.
Wright took the win over Hawaii’s Coco Ho and Brazil’s Jacqueline Silva in the second heat of Round 1 to move straight into the third round while sending both her rivals into the relegation Round 2.
The surfing conditions prevailing at the primary event site on the opening day of the third ASP Women’s World Tour event turned out to be pretty nice, offering the ASP Top 17 female surfers two-to-three foot lefts and rights. This created plenty of opportunity
for the surfers to unleash their most stylish and technical tricks during the course of their heat, much to the delight of the huge crowd in attendance at Fitzroy Beach.
Wright, 2011 ASP Women’s Rookie of the Year, had exhibited a formidable form during the first two stops of the ASP Women’s elite tour despite facing the likes of Australia’s Sally Fitzgibbons and Stephanie Gilmore along the way. Every single heat was transforming
her into an even more intimidating competitor as she gained experience and confidence.
Arriving in New Zealand to resume her campaign for the coveted ASP Women’s World Title, the 18-year-old Wright was expected to put on a superb performance. Living up to the expectations, she treated the fans to an exquisite performance during her encounter
with Ho and Silva.
Despite getting off to a slow start, Wright kept her cool and kept catching waves with the intended motivation of finding a good score. Gradually building momentum as the heat progressed to eventually lock her first business-wave in the later stages of the
heat, the Australian posted a 6.75 on the score-board. She followed it up with an 8.25-point wave to finish with a heat-total of 15.00 points.
Ho was forced to settle for second place after scoring a 5.90 and 7.75 off her best-two waves to finish with a heat-total of 13.65 points. As a result, she got relegated to the second round.
Silva joined the Hawaiian surfer in Round 2 after taking third place with a heat-total of 6.00 points, which comprised a 2.25 and 3.75-point wave.
