does it ever REALLY REALLY annoy you that the only medical advances made in the field are for type 2?! WHY do they get all the help?

im type 1 and it just really gets me that every time the news says "new advances in diabetic care" i hand around to hear it, and then am disappointed that it doesnt apply to me.

  1.    Because the treatments aren't advances in Type II treatment, they are just modifications.  The last true advance was the insulin pump, which is definitely a Type I advance.  There may be new medicines and new equipment, but so far they are just changes, not real advances.

And AJ, you did not get Type II diabetes at the age of 2.  Get your facts straight.

  2. Because type 2 is a lot simpler than type 1.  The type 1 doesnt make insulin, while the type 2 does make insulin.  The type 2 makes insulin it just doesnt get into the insulin into the cells as well.

  3. I am 11 and I have type 2 diabetes and i am really sorry you feel this way. But type one is a little more serious and maybe you haven't heard about them finding advances because they are working harder to make sure that they haven't made a mistake or something. think about you expect that they find a cure really fast, okay so they do. You end up taking the pill and it makes you have an increase of sedgiers. It has happend to me so please jsut be happy that they are taking there time to make sure it dosen't happen to you. oh and a mine i couldn't prevent i was TWO. HOW IS A TWO YEAR OLD SUPPOSED TO PREVENT DIABETES!!!! i am sorry but i hate it when people say that we can prevent it some of us can and other can't

  4. Okay but remember type 1s used to die from diabetes.  Now they can live long lives!  Restrictions on career opportunities and activities are much much thinner.  They can even eat what they'd like now (within reason of course, like anyone).  I'd say that's a medical advancement of huge proportions.

  5. sometimes, i'm not diabetic, but know someone who does have type1. They need more money to do research....I think type 2 is curable, I read this article about surgery possibly being able to cure type 2

  6. YES! and it annoys me that i am always declined for private health insurance because of my pre-existing condition, but it was purely genetic; it also annoys me that i've never been overweight or inactive, and have been a type-1 since childhood, and i get lumped into the same category as type-2s who actually had control over developing the disease. i know it's the same disease, but it's really not. there should be two different names, not just "type1" and "type2" because they are truly so different and most people assume they are pretty much the same thing because the media doesn't differentiate or make any big advances for the type 1s seem necessary or important

  7. They get all the research because the simple fact is that they are 95% of the diabetic population.  We can make all the noise we want, but ultimately these companies want to make a profit, and they know reaching Type 2's is the way to do that.

Thankfully we now have faster meters, less invasive lancets, faster insulins, pumps, analysis software, and the CGMS, which will hopefully be covered by insurance soon.  I was diagnosed in 1984 and we didn't have any of that stuff, so I'm grateful for what we have, but I share your frustration.

  8. insulin pumps and fast acting insulin are for type I.  type 1s had it rough prior to fast-acting.  you had to calculate your calories and inject like half an hour before eating.  then, if your food was delayed, you were in trouble!

and the needles used to be a LOT thicker.

    (P.S.: I've got Lou Gehrig's...wanna trade?)
