can somebody give me a good website which explains the best method to use when trying to calculate food (Carbs and Protein) ratio to insulin.

I tend to give my partner a little more of protein just to be safe and always ensure that he eats every couple of hours, however sometimes his glucose level is far too high. He has brittle Diabetes. Have had some answers earlier which were very much appreciated.

  1. Brittle diabetics are diffcult to control as their blood sugars can go from extreme lows to extreme highs, Your partner probably needs to be monitored by an Endocrinologist in a hospital setting to get the answer your looking for.

Your not going to find your answer on a web site since diabetes is a very individualized condition that needs to be closely monitored as to what your partner eats, how much your partner eats and when your partner eats so blood can be taken and analyzed at very particular times.

  2. I would actually recommend a Diabetes Educator over an endocrinologist for this task.  They can sit down with him for an hour at a time, download his meter, and help him figure out ratios and teach him how to make adjustments.  If you can attend the sessions with him, it's helpful because that's another brain that can absorb the information.  Call his doc's office for a referral.

It's also helpful to get him on a pump provided he's responsible and used to checking his BG's frequently.

  3. The best way to figure out insulin to carb ratio is to talk to his endocrinologist.  If he's had the disease for a while he should know himself.  If he's a type 1 diabetic then protein isn't a factor - that's for type 2.
