Question:

Type of Alabama spider??

Today as I entered my shed I saw a HUGE spider web. It was about half the size of a love seat but it was round of course. The spider when I finally saw all of it was brown, a lil red and it's butt was huge a lil bigger around than a quarter. It was brown but it had a lil white on it. It's legs honestly looked like hermit crab legs. I have never seen a spider like this before. Does anyone have any clues? I have searched on the internet for about an hour now and have found nothing.

Thanks for the help.

  2. Here's an article on Wikipedia on spiders in general; I'm sure you'll find your answer.

  3. It sounds just like a barn orb weaver, they are not dangerous at all.  They can bite if you provoke them enough, which is harder than you would think, and if they did it wouldn't do much more than mild swelling and numbness for a couple days.. wasps do more.

do an Image search for "Araneus cavaticus", which is the scientific name, and see if that looks like your spider.  I would give a link but get these d**n "999" errors every time I try.
