Ok my little brother want an eel. I thought i would buy one for him but, I dont know what type to get him. I dont want it to cost me the earth. Also it needs to be in a tank with diffrent fish like clown fish and others diffrent types of fish. He is also 10 (as in the title) so i want one he can take care of easy. We have a 50 gallon tank.

  1. I would have to say the Snowflake eel, that is the most reefsafe ell there is. but they will eat inverts, and maybe small fish if not feed well. They are not really dangerous, will he be playing in the tank with it? If not, i think he will be ok with parental supervision with a saltwater tank in general.

  2. eels can be very hard to take care of and will often eat/kill just about any other kind of fish.

  3. I'd say your out of luck. Eels are not generally very friendly to other fish,  and because they are mostly blind, they will eat anything they think they can fit their mouths over that swims by them. (and some they can't!) They also tend to be on the expensive side.

  4. well if he wants an eel get a glass eel but u need a freshwater tank and you can order them online for 2.89 at arizona gardens.com

I had a friend with one of these way back in elementary school... Thought it was the coolest thing ever. He would drop a worm in the tank and the fish would just swallow it whole.

I actually saw these at a Wal-Mart once, so they must not be too rare in the US.

  6. Orca.

  7. If your aquarium is saltwater (and it will have to be if you have clownfish), get a snowflake eel. They're non-aggressive and don't eat fish.

However, like all eels, they are natural escape artists. Make sure there's no way of jumping out of the tank. Also, their diets in the wild consist of invertebrates. Although they will occassionally recognize cleaner shrimp as things that should be kept alive, expect the spineless denizens in your tank to end up in its belly sooner or later.

  8. You're talking about a salt water tank FOR A 10 YEAR OLD!!?Stop giving him things he won't appreciate a week from now. Sigh...take the kid to an aquarium and call it a day.

  9. An eel? I would definately not recommend it! Eels are very dangerous and complicated. A ten year old is way too young to take care of this creature.
