Type of truck that gets the best gas mileage?

Question

If you know of a specific truck, I'd really like some ideas on what kind of truck to get! (I want a truck because I don't like cars.)

-not too hard on the gas.

-won't be hauling stuff.

-older the better. I like old fashioned trucks.

I'm just worried that the older they get, the more likely I'll be without an AC and getting stuck. and the less gas conserving they'll be.

Toyota Tacoma 5spd base model gets 30MPG and has a 4Ckinder that is 167 Hp and 178 lbs of torque on a light truck with room. Cost is 15,000.  They have a 6 and cost is 24 and up as they are 260 hp and 245 lb's of torque.  I had a 1982 Toyota Tacoma $WD with 167,000 miles on 22r engine which is a 125 hp 4 cyl. and it had a 6" lift with 35" super swampers and did great to 387,000 miles when tranny went.  In between no repairs except radiator. I pulled 15 yard dump trucks out of mud in new construction areas with it!  Consimer reports rates it and its bigger brother the Tundra #1 for 2nd year in row.

forget the truck - you don't need one -- lile the millions of people who bought a truck and now feel sorry about it.

If you are a contractor and need to haul 4 x 8's and cement, that's a different story.

Well, that's true.  The older the truck, the worse the gas mileage in all likelihood.  Still, there is hope.  :-)

Try one of these:

Toyota Tacoma: 19 / 25

Ford Ranger: 19/24

Mazda B-2300: 19/24

According to the EPA, the most fuel-efficient truck sold in the US is a 4-cylinder Ford Ranger.  it's certainly the smallest.  Nobody sells a "small" truck in the US, but the ranger is the least big.

An old Toyota or Nissan (old enough to be "small) will do even better than that.  30 mpg was about the most they ever got.  Your pre-conceptions about gas mileage are no good.  Truck gas mileage has gone steadily down for 20 years, because the trucks kept getting bigger and heavier.

I have a Chevy Silverado, I put 20 bucks in & it will give me a quarter tank.

It is also a very sturdy truck!
