It depends where you are.  In the UK they have barristers (people who practice before the courts) and solicitors (people who do other types of legal work).  The US doesn't recognize the distinction.  There are also many different practice areas such as criminal law, civil litigation, divorce, probate and estate, real estate, corporate law, intellectual property, etc.  Lawyers go to law school and then have to pass the bar exam to practice in the US.
