Question:

Typesetting Companies - reasons not to outsource?

A lot of people claim typesetting is dead - which may be the case in the US but certainly not in places like India and the Philippines, where business is thriving.

I do marketing for a typesetting company that has its production in India and its sales/project management in Ireland, and serves clients in the Europe and USA. What I'd like to know is what are some of the reservations and concerns that US typesetting companies have when it comes to outsourcing their work to typesetting companies based abroad?

  1. YOU are in a business that has been "limited" due to technology, laser printing, overnight delivery, etc.  Once, and still is in some areas, businesses wanted good, dependable, fast turn around, excellent quality, variety of printing needs, etc., local companies.  MOST large corporations, banks, etc., employed their own in-house print shops due to the required amount of forms, documents, etc., needed.

I understand some banks still maintain YOUR industries equipment due to the precise and necessary printing of MICR, Magnetic print of Account Numbers, Routing Transit, etc. along the bottom of in-house documents.  This is one area I can see NOT to outsource due to "precision" requirements.

Many "big" businesses' "mail outs", demands for forms, documents, etc., control of "typesetting operations" MUST be maintained in-house.  This also offers diversity, producing high quality at high speeds.

Hope this helps from my experience.
