Question:

Typical Japanese dinner?

Okay, I researched for it but couldn't find that much information -- or at least not anything specific...I am aware that the food ranges depending on age group in Japan but I want something that is perhaps traditional...not the fast food joint stuff or American foods, you know? So if anyone could direct me to some place or just tell me the basics for a Japanese meal that would be helpful.

Thanks in advance!

If it helps, I am just doing a menu project for my Culinary Arts class. :)

  1. It is hard to say what typical Japanese dinner is.

We normally have one main dish, meat or fish, along with steamed rice, miso soup and some small dishes, such as salad or pickles etc.

Western or other Asian dishes, such as pasta, stew, curry or noodles are also popular dinner at home.

The web sites below are from Japanese chain restaurants in Japan.

It is written in Japanese but I think the pictures give you some idea what sorts of dish we have.

  2. For breakfast, they worship Natto!

It's fermented soy beans. It's a very health food.

Ask any Japanese, they love Natto for breakfast.

They will either eat it wth rice/congee/porridge/soup or etc.

    It's like Marmite/Vegemite.

Based on my experience, Japanese also like to pack boxes of breakfast and call it as "bento". Usually their breakfast consist the below items:-

    Sushi

    Rice cakes

    Egg omelette

Pickle salad/veges (which is usually cucumber, radish, and or eggplant or carrot)

Umeboshi (sour plum) - they either eat it wth rice or just like that

Slice of grilled fish (usually fillet of salmon)

    Steamed Tofu

(these coming from my childhood friends & contact who either went to Japan for student exchange programs or for work)

By the way, I found your Question similar to a post I've read in yahoo thus I searched for it. http://sg.answers.yahoo.com/question/ind...

I believe the above link will assist you much more. =)

    Hope it helps!
